David Sullivan rules out January sale of Winston Reid
|
David Sullivan has revealed that no first team players will be sold in the forthcoming January transfer window.
And that automatically rules out the possibility of contract rebel Winston Reid leaving until the end of his current contract next June.
West Ham's co-owner told the Mirror: "There is not any price we would sell any players for. First team players will not be sold.
"We are happy where we are, we don't want to unsettle the team, we are short of numbers with the Africa Cup of Nations and I can't imagine any circumstances where we would sell a player in January.
"We'd sell a squad player because we are looking at bringing players in in Janaury. But we've got the luxury of buying for the future. Normally we are buying through panic but not on this occasion."
Sam Allardyce revealed earlier in the week that he and Sullivan are looking to sign at least one player of sufficient quality to slot straight in to the first team, if required.
The club are also set to confirm the arrival of 21-year-old central defender Doneil Henry - who is understood to have received a work permit - from Candian side Toronto.

sensible decision considering the small fee we would now get for him. hopefully qualifying for europe will change his mind about staying though i doubt it

Vaz Te and Jarvis are two obvious ones that we would hope to move on. If some struggler thinks Nolan can do a job for them as well that would be DELIGHTFUL.

I know that Sully is giving his normal front to the media, but the trouble with pronouncements like this is that they can bite you in the arse sometimes. Of course there's no sense in selling Reid on the cheap right now, any fool can see that.
But I'm sure he privately realises now that the way you move forward as a club is by regenerating the squad. The times we have just largely sat on our existing squad, Summer 2010 and Summer 2013, are the times we struggled desperately the next season. Whenever he says "we won't sell anybody" it sends a shudder down my spine. You simply can't be that inflexible or uncreative in the market.

I don't see the need for changing the squad in January, barely at all. But if the right move comes up, that will benefit the squad, you take it.
If somebody offers £100m for Reid, is Sully going to say "there's no price we will take for our best players"? It would be idiotic.

He says first team players won't be sold. Vaz Te & Jarvis you'd regard as squad players and liable for sacrifice if it meant we could bring in another quality player.

No, Sully is going to say, 'that's a mad bid that we had to accept'.
99% of West Ham fans will agree with him. 1% of the mongs who come on here will call him a liar and be OUTRAGED.

Agreed. But my issue is that too often we've seen Sully actually sit on his hands in transfer windows. I think he is utterly obsessed with not being a selling club, but the reality is that every club is a selling club. The only issue is whether the sale suits them or not.
People are talking about Vaz Te and Jarvis being sold in Jan, but really they should have been sold last Summer. Other than Diame, there hasn't really been a positive sale of a player at West Ham since Sully took over. That's a weakness imo.

I think BFS had it right the other week when he pitched a 'mad' January bid for REID at about £20m. Some CUNTS (yes you Spurs) may try it on with about £3m but should be rebuffed. I suspect he already has agreed something with Liverpool myself for the summer so probably wouldn't even accept a move like that.

Alex to be fair we haven't had much to sell since Parker apart from the journeymen who helped bring us up.

Good, fuck him, it will disrupt the squad and well done Sullivan by preferring to get nothing in the summer rather than cash in and disrupt the squad.
Fuck Winston.

Should Sully have left a severed horse's head in the bed of the club chairmen he had decided should take Vaz Te and Jarvis against their will?
Would he have made Jarvis and Vaz Te an offer they couldn't refuse if they didn't want to go?

Fair comment, and I think that's where the massive chip on the club's shoulder comes from. It's the Rio sale basically, and the way the money from it was squandered.
But one of the biggest masterstrokes of that era was selling Hartson to bring in Foe and Di Canio.

very true about the rio cash. scandalous how the parties involved got away with it
i do agree that parts of the squad do need to be overhauled and certain players like jarvis will never settle. hopefully the new canadian CB or the lad ftom celtic will be a good replacement for reid

The current board are simply the best we've ever had at West Ham. I can't see how that anyone can dispute that
